The
next stage is acceptance. This is
like a sunrise. The grieving person
begins to get on with life. Energy
and interests, pleasure and joy gradually return. If the grief work has been done for the bereaved person and
the helper, there is a new sense of strength and purpose, and the relationship
is deeper and wider than before. Both feel OK about the relationship and
so are able to connect in new, nourishing, and more productive ways. Both the bereaved person and the friend
have to make a myriad of choices to achieve a stage of acceptance. One of the hard lessons learned
throughout the healing is that adults often have to learn how to pick the
choice that sucks the least.
